One culture that has impressed me in many ways is the Japanese culture. I visited Japan on a week's vacation. I visited Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, and Osaka. One thing that truly stuck out about Japanese culture is their concern for space. Upon exploring Tokyo not one inch of space was wasted. In the bustling city you could see tall skyscraper buildings with tiny buildings etched next to them. It was like looking at a puzzle with space interlocking around each corner. Space was even a concern at local restaurants where you could find a hook or a small compartment under your table to place your coat and purse instead of placing it in the seat next to you. What truly shocked me was when I went dancing at an average club. We actually received keys to personal lockers to keep our coats and shopping bags in. It was definitely an experience. You always seemed to have enough space of your own to keep yourself and your belongings so as to not disturb anyone Else's space.

I find it great that the japanese use up as much space as they can to make things more efficient and practical for the environment and thier habitants. Also, it is ironic that the japanese have lockers for each individual in an average club because i know that the japanese culture is group-based and focuses more on the group rather than the individual. So having lockers for each person is really unque in such a culture.
ReplyDeleteI think that geography has a lot to do with the cultural evolution of a given country. In Japan, relatively speaking the amount of people living there compared to the width of the islands makes one really feel awed. It would seem that efficiency and practicality are not just a way of life but the only way to live in such a landscape. Many high quality electronics and goods are produced in Japan, and this is, I believe, an extension of the cultural evolution, inspired by the challenges of the external environment.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very interesting. I am very fond of having "my" space at all times and it sounds like every place is extremely crowded and closed in, not sure if I would be able to handle it. Those little compartments you discribe do sounds neat, I wonder if you have any pictures?
